Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy
We also bring specialized training and extensive clinical experience in trauma, interpersonal violence, sexual abuse, harmful sexual behaviour, sibling sexual abuse, family systems, burnout, vicarious trauma, and relationship-based approaches to care.
Our approach is eclectic, flexible, and individualized. We draw from these modalities thoughtfully and intentionally, using what best fits your unique needs, goals, history, relationships, and pace. We do not fit you into a model. Instead, we use our training and experience to shape therapy around who you are and what will be most meaningful and helpful for you.
We offer training, clinical supervision, and case consultation for professionals and organizations looking to deepen their practice in specialized areas of clinical work. This includes support with case formulation, complex trauma, sexual abuse, harmful sexual behaviour, sibling sexual abuse, family-based work, relational safety, and trauma-informed care.

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy that thoughtfully integrates interactions with horses into the therapeutic process.
Sessions are offered by Melissa Maltar, MSW, RSW, at Shady Hills Farm, located at 750 8th Concession West, Puslinch, Ontario.
In these sessions, Melissa brings her clinical training as a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist to support clients in working toward their therapeutic goals, much like they would in a traditional office setting. The presence of the horse can support reflection, emotional regulation, connection, and insight, while the therapy itself remains grounded in psychotherapy and is directed by a licensed mental health professional.

Acknowledgments
Our work takes place on traditional Indigenous territories in what is now called Ontario, a province covered by 46 treaties and other agreements. We acknowledge with respect and gratitude the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples who have cared for these lands and waters since time immemorial, and who continue to shape, strengthen, and contribute to communities across Ontario today.
We understand that land acknowledgments must be more than words. They are one small part of an ongoing responsibility to recognize Indigenous sovereignty, treaty relationships, historical and ongoing colonial violence, and the ways Indigenous presence, knowledge, and rights have been erased or minimized.
As social workers and psychotherapists, we are committed to practicing with humility, accountability, and an anti-oppressive lens. We strive to create a therapy space where difficult conversations can be held with care, where power and privilege can be examined, and where all people are met with respect, dignity, and openness.
Our hope is to offer a space that is emotionally safer, inclusive, and grounded in meaningful respect for the histories, identities, relationships, and communities that shape each person’s life.
